Fighting sexual harassment and violence : the SAFER Plage system will be extended to all guardedd beaches this summer.

This summer, the City of Marseille is pursuing its commitment to fighting sexual harassment and violence against women, maintaining the SAFER Plage initiative on supervised beaches along its coastline : a mediation and intervention team correlated to a free alert phone application.

Tested for the first time in August 2022 on Prado Sud beach, the SAFER Plage system has been extended to 4 Marseille beaches at summer 2023: Pointe Rouge, Bonneveine, Catalans and Corbière. Summer 2024, the operation ramped up, and the initiative was extended to cover 5 more beaches: Prophète, Frioul, Sormiou and Prado Nord / Sud. The Bonneveine zone expanded to include the Huveaune, Borély and Vieille Chapelle beaches as well.

The app is in French but can be easily navigated and authorities will respond to alerts using basic English, via the geopositioning system.

"SAFER Plage", a free alert phone application

Available free of charge on stores, the intuitive and anonymous application enables anyone victim or witness of sexual harassment and violence to raise the alarm by activating an emergency button.

Directly linked to the mediation teams active on guarded beaches, the application enables them to intervene rapidly in the event of a report.

The application will be operational from May 30 to September 1, 2025, as described in the scroll-down menu above. Outside this period, call 17.

The application can be downloaded quickly and free of charge via QR codes displayed on beaches (banners, posters).

What's the point of such an application ?

SAFER was originally created to face sexual harassment and violence in festive environment, such as the Marsatac festival in Marseilles.

Unfortunately, sexism, sexual harassment and violence against women are not confined to festive environments. More than one in three women aged 18 to 34 surveyed said they had already been a victim of harassment on the beach. And more than half said they were afraid to go to the beach alone.

Faced with these facts, the City of Marseille is assuming its responsibilities and is determined to pursue its commitment to the fight against harassment on beaches. By adapting the innovative format proposed by SAFER, it is investing in local solutions to protect women, and thus make Marseilles a safer city.

Active local associations take action

Local feminist associations, committed to fight violence against women will be on hand from time to time on the beaches, to support the mediation team.

These will enable Marseilles residents to come and meet them, as well as to convey prevention and awareness-raising messages against sexual harassment and violence.

Since 2022, over 200,000 people have been made aware of gender-based and sexual violence

The City of Marseille's commitment to women's rights and the fight to end violence against women has been rewarded by the AFL Diversity Foundation's “Inclusion and Diversity 2023” award for its campaign against sexism on beaches.

Since 2022, 3,500 people have downloaded the SAFER Plage phone application.
In 2024, over a hundred sexual harassment and violence related situations were handled by trained mediation teams. More than 30,000 people have been made aware of the issue.
