Editorial : Marseille captures all the votes!

This new quarterly newsletter about the City of Marseille illustrates the dramatic change in our city. Major international media publications, from the New York Times to Les Echos, and the WallPaper Magazine which has just awarded Marseille the “City of the Year” award for 2014, are underlining its cultural, economic and urban appeal. After the success of our European Capital of Culture year in 2013, this shows that Marseille is continuing to move forward and to capture all the votes!

Within the context of the Aix-Marseille metropolis in 2016, this new term of office which I have the honour of undertaking will help to strengthen and broaden this dynamic.

The challenge is to stay the course by building on the continuing development of Marseille’s image.

The MuCEM is an institution with a global significance and symbolises the renewal of our coastline, while the Musée d’Histoire, which is unique in France in this field, reflects the new attractiveness of Marseille centre.

Moreover, the boards of major companies no longer hesitate to set up their subsidiaries in our city, or even to transfer their head offices here. As part of the Euroméditerranée project, which is the driving force behind increasing the appeal of our city, the British group Hammerson has built the “Terrasses du Port”, the first shopping centre on the seafront!

Marseille is a must-see tourist destination attracting ever-greater numbers, from convention delegates to cruise passengers, and generating significant economic benefits right across the region (11 million visitors in 2013!).

Whether it is hosting the Euro 2016 football tournament or our candidature for European Capital of Sport in 2017, all of these developments are strengthening Marseille’s international credentials.

I thank the elected representatives in my municipal team for working on a daily basis towards this objective.

All of them, together with our partners, are working hard by my side so that Marseille can fully assert itself as the Capital of Southern Europe and the Mediterranean, to the benefit of all the inhabitants in our region and of our visitors.

Jean-Claude GAUDIN

Mayor of Marseille
